The Middleby Corporation is a world leader in three business segments: commercial cooking, industrial baking and processing and residential appliances.

The Middleby project dealing with parts was implemented a few months after the initial residential project had gone live. This gave users a chance to adjust to one system before starting to learn new processes for a second system.

The parts project deals with spare parts for the appliances distributed by Middleby and as such there are a very large number of item codes to manage.

Shipment of parts to Middleby are done in bulk with multiple purchase orders per shipment. When items are scanned at receiving, TransLution™ checks if the item can be found on any of the orders. If the item is found on more than one order the user can select which order line to fill first.

Because they deal with so many items which are often quite small, Middleby has worked with TransLution™ and Syllogist to develop some unique processes to reduce the amount of fetching and carrying done by operators. Mixed items are packed into totes and then when doing a putaway, the user simply scans a tote and TransLution™ knows which items are available for him to put away. Because the system knows what is in each tote the system is able to manage their walk sequence based on the tote contents to optimise the putaway times.

The parts warehouse has both bulk and pickface storage and there is also a process to manage pickface replenishment.

In order to manage the large number of items, Middleby does not only rely on an annual stock take but they do regular cycle counts as well using the TransLution™ Cycle Count module.  Middleby is hoping to stop the annual stock takes due to the constant cycle counting done by the system.

TransLution™ is used to manage the picking process as well. As with Putaway, items are picked into totes and due to the size of the orders, often one order can by picked into multiple totes by multiple pickers. At the end of the picking process, all the totes for a single order are married together into boxes using the TransLution™ packing and checking process. TransLution™ generates box labels and packing slips and integrates to the various shippers used by Middleby
